Your stay with Cherwell Hospital

Outpatient Visit

This is where you meet your Consultant who will examine you and discuss the proposed surgery. The Consultant will explain all of your options as well as the possible risks involved. The consent process will be explained in full before you are asked to sign a form. You will be given a copy of this form to take away with you and you are free to change your mind at any time. 

If you do not have an appointment, the form and information will be sent to you. If you have any questions please contact Blakelands Hospital on 01908 334200. The Consultant will then complete the consent form with you at the time of your admission confirming that you still wish to proceed with the surgery.

General Information

Please indicate on your medical questionnaire whether you have any specific dietary needs or religious requirements that you wish to observe. Patients admitted for day surgery need to ensure that they have a responsible adult to collect them and, if you have had a general anaesthetic or sedation, to remain with you at home for a minimum of 24 hours following surgery. If you have any special needs or require language translation please advise us before admission or during attendance at pre-admission clinic if you have an appointment. If you do not bring your medical questionnaire we will no be able to proceed with your booking

Medication

The clinical staff at the hospital will need to know about any drugs or medication you are currently taking, including any herbal/complementary medications, which should be recorded on your pre-admission questionnaire. You should bring your medication with you and our nursing staff will provide a receipt on admission.

All medication should be individually packaged and clearly labelled. Any regular blood pressure and/or heart medications should be taken as they would normally, on the day of treatment, with a small amount of water. If you are taking any anticoagulant medications e.g. Warfarin or Aspirin please contact the hospital for advice on how to manage these. Your Consultant will advise you whether any other medication you routinely take should be stopped and when you are to start again. Please call the hospital should you be in any doubt over this.

Valuables

We ask that you do not bring valuables or large sums of money with you into the hospital. Please note that the hospital cannot accept any responsibility for your valuables.

Children

Children must be supervised at all times by a responsible adult when visiting the hospital. staff will not be available to supervise any children brought into the hospital.

Transport

You will need to organise transportation to the Hospital before and after surgery. We strongly recommend that you arrange for close family or friends to collect you following your procedure rather than the local taxi service. If you are eligible for hospital transport please contact the Treatment Centre.

There is parking for visitors within the car parks. The hospital entrances and exits have been designed for easy access for wheelchairs. If you require the use of a wheelchair during your stay, please indicate this on your medical questionnaire or notify the receptionist on arrival.

Pain Management

The hospital will provide you with pain relief tablets to take home if you do not have any.
